PANTANAL - MS - BRAZIL
The Pantanal is an ecosystem with 250 thousand kilometers in length which is distributed to the south of Mato Grosso, the northwest of Mato Grosso do Sul, the northern Paraguay and eastern Bolivia, and is therefore at the heart of South America in the Upper Paraguay River Basin. The region is a lowland rain where fauna and flora are of rare beauty and abundance, influenced by four major biomes: Amazon, Cerrado, Chaco and Atlantic Forest.
The Paraguay River and its tributaries traverse the Pantanal forming extensive flooded areas that serve as shelter for many fish, such as dourados, pintados, pacus, piraputangas, piaus, and also for other animals such as parrots, capybaras, tucanos and otters. Many animals threatened with extinction in other parts of Brazil still have strong populations in the Pantanal region, including cervo-do-pantanal, the capybara, the tuiuiú, and alligator. It is also common to find the famous onça-pintada. For these reasons, the Pantanal is considered by UNESCO as World Natural Heritage and Biosphere Reserve.
Hot and humid in summer, and relatively cooler in the winter, the Pantanal weather constantly shows large air humidity due to evapotranspiration associated with the accumulated water in the soil during the wet season.
During the months of drought, May to October, approximately, the landscape undergoes radical changes: when the waters retreats, fields, sand banks and islands are discovered. Every 24 hours, about 178 million liters of water fall on Pantanal plains.
There are more species of birds in the Pantanal (656) than in North America (around 500), and more fish species than in Europe (263 against 200). The immense variety of life, translated into constant movement of shapes, colours and sounds, is one of the most beautiful spectacles on Earth. Because of this alternation between dry and wet periods, the Pantanal landscape is never the same.
